Born and raised in Bowman, South Carolina, Republican Hugh E. Weathers has served as South Carolina’s Commissioner of Agriculture since 2004. A fourth-generation farmer at Circle W. Farms, Hugh graduated magma cum laude from the University of South Carolina earning BS degrees in accounting and finance. In 2019, the University of South Carolina awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Humanities in Public Service.
Throughout his career, Hugh has served on United Dairy Industry Association, Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, American Dairy Association of South Carolina, South Carolina Dairy Association, South Carolina Farm Bureau legislative committee and political action committee, South Carolina Conservation Bank, AgSouth Farm Credit Association, Greater Bowman Business Development Council, and many other industry positions.
Hugh is married to the former Blanche Gramling of Spartanburg County and together they have three sons, Gill (Elizabeth), Edward (Anna), and Julius (Sara), and five grandchildren, Clara, Virginia, Ransom, Darby, and Jane.
